:: ประวัติย่อ :: ร็อบ โคเฮน เริ่มต้นอาชีพในวงการภาพยนตร์ในยุคเซเว่นตีส์และเอทตีส์ กับงานอำนวยการสร้าง แต่หลังจากที่หันมาทำงานกำกับดูบ้างเมื่อช่วงต้นยุคเอทตีส์ ซึ่งเขาเริ่มต้นได้ไม่สวยนัก เขาจึงตัดสินใจวางมือจากงานอำนวยการสร้างเมื่อช่วงต้นทศวรรษไนน์ตีส์ เพื่อทุ่มเทกับงานกำกับอย่างเต็มที่ และในที่สุดก็มีผลงานที่โด่งดังและได้รับความนิยมอย่างสูง ในเรื่อง The Fast and the Furious
โคเฮนเติบโตที่ ฮัดสัน ริเวอร์ วัลเลย์ ในนิวยอร์ค และรู้ตัวตั้งแต่ตอนที่เป็นนักเรียนมัธยมต้นแล้วว่า เขาต้องการเป็นนักสร้างหนัง เมื่อจบการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยฮาวาร์ดในปี 1971 เขาจึงมุ่งหน้าสู่มหานครลอสแองเจลิส เพื่อทำงานให้กับผู้อำนวยการสร้างคนหนึ่ง แต่ไม่นานนักเขาก็ต้องตกงาน เพราผู้อำนวยการสร้างผู้นั้นล้มละลาย โคเฮนต้องแก้ขัดด้วยการเป็นภารโรงที่โรงพยาบาลสัตว์แห่งหนึ่งเป็นช่วงสั้น ๆ ก่อนที่จะได้งานเป็นนักอ่านเพื่อคัดเลือกงานเขียนให้กับตัวแทนชื่อ ไมค์ เมเดวอย เขาเป็นผู้แนะนำบทของเรื่อง The Sting (1973) และทำงานได้อย่างโดดเด่น จนก้าวหน้าและได้ตำแหน่งใหม่เป็นผู้กำกับหนังโทรทัศน์ให้กับ ทเว็นตี้ เซ็นจูรี่ ฟ็อกซ์ เทเลวิชั่น และในปี 1973 โคเฮน วัยเพียง 24 ปี ก็ได้ก้าวขึ้นเป็นรองประธานกรรมการบริหาร ของฝ่ายภาพยนตร์ที่โมทาวน์เพิ่งก่อตั้งขึ้น
งานกำกับภาพยนตร์ครั้งแรกของโคเฮน เป็นหนังเบาสมองเกี่ยวกับฮาวาร์ด เรื่อง A Small Circle of Friends (1980) ผลงานเรื่องนี้ล้มเหลวไม่เป็นท่า และหนังยาวเรื่องที่สองของเขา คือ Scandalous (1984) ก็เช่นกัน โคเฮนจึงต้องหวนกลับไปสู่งานอำนวยการสร้าง โดยรับหน้าที่คุมบริษัท ทาฟท์-แบริช โดยเขายังคงพยายามลับฝีมือด้านงานกำกับอยู่เสมอ ๆ จากการรับหน้าที่กำกับทีวีซีรีส์หลาย ๆ เรื่อง เช่น Miami Vice เป็นต้น
โคเฮนหันมาจับงานกำกับภาพยนตร์อีกครั้ง ในหนังอัตชีวประวัติเรื่อง Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993) ที่ทำรายได้ดีกว่าหนังยาวเรื่องก่อน ๆ ของเขาอย่างเทียบกันไม่ติด จากนั้น เขาเปลี่ยนมากำกับหนังแนวแฟนตาซี ที่เต็มไปด้วยเทคนิคพิเศษดูบ้าง ในเรื่อง Dragonheart (1996) สำหรับเรื่องนี้ แม้หนังจะมีประสบความสำเร็จในด้านรายได้ แต่เขาก็สร้างเครดิตให้กับตัวเอง ด้วยการสร้างตัวละครที่เป็นดิจิตอลร้อยเปอร์เซ็นต์เป็นตัวแรกของวงการภาพยนตร์ คือ ดราโก้ นั่นเอง
หนังแอ๊คชั่นของโคเฮนเรื่อง Daylight (1996) ที่นำแสดงโดย ซิลเวสเตอร์ สตอลโลน ไม่ประสบความสำเร็จอีกเช่นเคย แต่เขาก็แก้มือได้ เมื่อผลงานดราม่ากึ่งสารคดีของเอชบีโอ เรื่อง The Rat Pack (1998) ทำให้เขาได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงรางวัลของสมาคมผู้กำกับ (Director’s Guild) และหนังยังได้เข้าชิงรางวัลเอ็มมี่อีกหลายรางวัล
หลังจากส่งหนังวัยรุ่นแนวระทึกขวัญเรื่อง The Skulls (2000) ออกฉาย โคเฮนก็สามารถเอาชนะอคติของฮอลลีวูดต่อผลงานของผู้กำกับรุ่นเขาได้ และสามารถก้าวขึ้นแท่นผู้กำกับสุดฮ็อตสำหรับหนังแอ๊คชั่น ด้วยวัย 52 ปี จากผลงานเรื่อง The Fast and the Furious (2001) ที่เป็นเรื่องราวของแวดวงนักซิ่ง และนำแสดง วิน ดีเซล ซึ่งในขณะนั้นยังเป็นนักแสดงที่เรียกได้ว่าโนเนม หนังก็ได้รับความนิยมอย่างสูงจากฉากไล่ล่าอันน่าตื่นเต้นและมีสไตล์ ในรถยนต์ซูเปอร์คาร์ที่มีดีไซน์บาดใจ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งสำหรับคนรักความเร็ว
ใน XXX (2002) ซึ่งเป็นหนังแอ๊คชั่นสุดขั้วเรื่องล่าสุดของโคเฮน เขาดึง วิน ดีเซล กลับมาร่วมงานเป็นดารานำอีกครั้ง ด้วยความหวังที่จะย้ำรอยความสำเร็จจาก The Fast and the Furious
