จอห์น แม็คเทียร์แนน จบการศึกษาจากสถาบันการศึกษาภาพยนตร์ของอเมริกัน ลอสแองเจิลลิส แคลิฟอร์เนีย และเขาเคยเรียนที่โรงเรียน จิลเลียด นิวยอร์ค
