อลิเซีย คีย์ส เกิดที่ นิวยอร์ค เธอเริ่มเรียนเปียโนตั้งแต่อายุ 7 ปี โดยการสนับสนุนจากแม่ของเธอ อลิเซียได้พิสูจน์ให้เห็นว่าอย่างชัดเจนว่าเธอเป็นผู้ที่ได้รับการยอมรับว่าผลงานของเธออยู่ในระดับมืออาชีพจากอาร์ตสคูลในแมนฮัตตัน ที่ซึ่งอลิเซียได้ทำหน้าที่หลักคือการร้องเพลงในโบสถ์
ไม่เพียงแต่พรสวรรค์ทางด้านการร้องเพลงเท่านั้น แต่ผลการเรียนของเธอยังพิสูจน์ให้เห็นว่าเธอสามารถทำได้ดีทั้งสองอย่าง อลิเซียได้ใบจบการศึกษาและได้ขึ้นกล่าวอำลาเมื่ออายุ 16 ปี
ในปี 1998 อลิเซียเซ็นสัญญากับอริสต้า เร็คคอร์ด และได้แต่งเพลง โปรดิวซ์ และบันทึกเสียงอัลบั้มของเธอเอง
ในปี 1999 อลิเซียได้ออกจากอริสต้า และเข้าร่วมกับ เจ เร็คคอร์ด ซึ่งดูแลโดย คลีฟ เดวิด และความสำเร็จของเธอเกิดขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว
อัลบั้มของเธอในปี 2001 "Songs in A Minor" ขายได้ 6 ล้านแผ่น และได้รับ 5 รางวัลแกรมมี่ สำหรับอัลบั้ม "Diary" ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศจากแกรมมี่ถึง 4 รางวัลด้วยกัน ในปี 2005.
