:: ประวัติย่อ :: เควิน คอสต์เนอร์ เป็นดาราฮอลลีวูดที่กำยำและดูเงียบขรึม นับเป็นเวลาหลายปี ที่เขาเป็นเสมือนตัวแทนของวงการเบสบอลบนจอเงิน เขาชื่นชอบบทตัวละครที่จริงจัง และสร้างความถูกต้องให้เกิดในสังคม ด้วยการฉายเดี่ยวโดยไม่งอมืองอเท้ารอพึ่งระบบ ตั้งแต่บท ร้อยโทดันบาร์ ผู้รักอิสระ ใน Dances With Wolves, บทโรบินฮู้ด ตลอดจนบทและบท ทนายจิม แกร์ริสัน ใน JFK
คอสต์เนอร์เกิดที่แคลิฟอร์เนีย และได้สัมผัสกับวงการละครขณะที่เขาเรียนการตลาดอยู่ เมื่อเรียนจบ เขาทำงานในสาขาที่เรียนมาได้แค่เดือนเดียว แล้วจึงเปลี่ยนใจมาลองงานแสดงดู และหลังจากชิมลางด้วยหนังทุนต่ำเรื่อง Sizzle Beach USA ในปี 1974 เขาจึงตระหนักว่า หากจะเอาดีทางนี้คงต้องเอาจริงเอาจังขึ้นกว่าเดิมอีกมาก เขาตระเวนเข้าร่วมคัดเลือกตัวนักแสดงตามที่ต่าง ๆ จนได้แสดงหนังของสตูดิโอใหญ่เป็นครั้งแรกในเรื่อง Night Shift (1982) ในบทประกอบเล็ก ๆ บทหนึ่ง แล้วตามด้วยเรื่อง Frances (1982) ในบทเล็ก ๆ เช่นกัน
ต่อมา ผู้กำกับ ลอว์เรนซ์ คาสดัน ให้เขาเล่นบทที่สำคัญขึ้น เป็นหนุ่มที่ฆ่าตัวตาย และเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของเรื่องราวทั้งหมดใน The Big Chill (1983) น่าเสียดายที่เมื่อตัดต่อเสร็จเรียบร้อย ผู้ชมได้เห็นภาพของเขา เพียงเส้นผมและมือในช่วงเครดิตต้นเรื่องเพียงแวบเดียว แต่สองปีต่อมา คาสดันเรียกตัวคอสเนอร์มาร่วมงานอีก ในบทเด่นเป็นมือปืนจอมห้าวในหนังคาวบอยตะวันตกเรื่อง Silverado (1985) ชื่อเสียงโถมถลาเข้ามาหาคอสต์เนอร์ เมื่อเขาได้สวมบทนำในหนังฟอร์มใหญ่ถึงสองเรื่องในปี 1987 คือบท น.ต.ทอม ฟาร์เรล ใน No Way Out และบท เจ้าหน้าที่เอลเลียต เนส ที่ตามโค่นเจ้าพ่อ อัล คาโปน ใน The Untouchables ความนิยมที่มีในตัวเขา เริ่มขยายวงกว้างขึ้นอีก จากบทนำในหนังเบสบอลสองเรื่อง คือ Bull Durham (1988) และ Field of Dreams (1989) ที่ออกฉายทิ้งช่วงกันเพียงไม่กี่เดือน
ด้วยชื่อเสียงที่ได้จากผลงานที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างสูงเหล่านี้ คอสต์เนอร์จึงคิดพลิกผันตนเองสู่บทบาทผู้กำกับบ้าง เขาใช้ทุนที่มีอยู่ไม่มากนัก เดินทางไปเซาธ์ดาโกต้าเพื่อถ่ายทำหนังมหากาพย์แนวตะวันตก ซึ่งนับเป็นเรื่องแรกของฮอลลีวูดในรอบหลาย ๆ ปี โดยใช้ชื่อเรื่องว่า Dances With Wolves (1990) แรก ๆ หลายคนสบประมาทว่าหนังเรื่องนี้คงจะไปไม่รอด และให้ชื่อเล่นหนังเรื่องนี้ว่า “ความสูญเปล่าของคอสต์เนอร์” ทว่าเมื่อเสร็จสมบูรณ์และออกฉายจริง นอกจากผลงานเรื่องนี้จะเป็นหนึ่งในหนังทำเงินสูงสุดในปี 1990 แล้ว คอสต์เนอร์ยังกวาดรางวัลออสการ์กลับบ้านอีกเป็นกระบุง ซึ่งในจำนวนนั้นมีรางวัลภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยม และผู้กำกับยอดเยี่ยมด้วย
ในปี 1991 คอสต์เนอร์แสดงนำใน Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves และ JFK แล้วตามด้วยเรื่อง The Bodyguard ในปีต่อมา ซึ่งเขาประกบคู่กับราชินีเพลงป็อบ วิทนีย์ ฮุสตั้น และพาหนังเรื่องนี้กวาดรายได้มหาศาลในปีนั้น ดูเหมือนความสำเร็จจะผ่านเข้ามาอย่างไม่ขาดสาย จนกระทั่งเขาเริ่มเข้าสู่ช่วงตกต่ำ เริ่มจาก A Perfect World (1993), Wyatt Erp (1994) ตลอดจนหนังผจญภัยแนววิทยาศาสตร์ Waterworld (1995) ที่ล้วนต้องพบกับความผิดหวังด้านรายได้และเสียงวิจารณ์ แม้จะกู้ชื่อกลับคืนมาได้บ้างจากหนังรักเบาสมองเรื่อง Tin Cup (1996) แต่เขากลับต้องพบกับความผิดหวังอีกครั้ง จากเรื่อง The Postman (1997) หลังจากนั้น เขามีผลงานหนังโรแมนติกดราม่าเรื่อง Message in a Bottle (1998), หนังดราม่าเบสบอลของผู้กำกับ แซม ไรมี่ เรื่อง For Love of the Game, ตลอดจนเรื่อง Thirteen Days (2000) และ 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001) ที่ประสบความสำเร็จบ้าง ล้มเหลวบ้าง สลับกันไป ผลงานเรื่องล่าสุดของเขา Dragonfly (2002) เป็นที่ครหาว่าไปลอกเอาเรื่อง The Sixth Sense มาแบบทื่อ ๆ
แม้ว่าความตกต่ำในช่วงปลายทศวรรษไนน์ตีส์ จะทำให้ความนิยมในตัวคอสต์เนอร์แผ่วลงไม่น้อย แต่สำหรับหลายคน เขายังคงเป็นนักแสดงที่ยืนยงที่สุดคนหนึ่งในฮอลลีวูด เขาเคยกล่าวถึงบทที่เขาชื่นชอบเอาไว้ว่า “วีรบุรุษที่แท้จริง คือผู้ที่อาจจะเคยล้มเหลวและมีข้อบกพร่องในตัวเอง แต่ลุกขึ้นสู้จนได้รับชัยชนะในที่สุด เพราะว่าพวกเขาซื่อสัตย์ต่ออุดมคติ, ความเชื่อ และคำมั่นของตนเอง” ซึ่งคำกล่าวนั้นน่าจะบอกอะไรได้บ้าง
