Margo Fryer, Director

Margo is the founding Director of the UBC Learning Exchange. In addition to her role as Director of the Learning Exchange, Margo is an Assistant Professor in the School of Community and Regional Planning and the Director of the UBC-Community Learning Initiative, a new model for course-based Community Service-Learning at UBC.
Margo received her PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from UBC in 2003. Prior to undertaking her PhD program, Margo worked as a researcher in the health and social service fields. She collaborated on research projects with community groups, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. This research was concerned with a wide variety of issues, including childhood sexual abuse, immigrant women's perinatal health, child poverty, the needs of seniors, women's health care and multicultural service delivery. Margo has also evaluated pilot projects aimed at implementing policy initiatives such as using community development strategies to promote health, involving the community in health care decision-making, and building collaborative partnerships among health care agencies. Margo has also taught research and evaluation principles and skills to community members.

"My entire career has been in the field of education, first as a primary class teacher, then later in science advisory work with an education authority. I also worked for a while as a research officer, developing
classroom ideas for primary design technology. I have now been working at UWIC for over seventeen years, lecturing mainly in Education. As Head of Primary Partnership, until 2004 my main responsibility was for liaising with our many primary partner schools to ensure a quality course experience for students. This involved leading the UWIC based primary staff team and organising staff development for school based mentors.
As Director of Enterprise, I lead the Schools Third Mission activities, liaising and collaborating with many external organizations. Third Mission activities include both income generating projects and innovative projects of social and cultural benefit to the community
I am also Secretary of the National Primary Centre Cymru and enjoy working with an enthusiastic group of people from across Wales who are all dedicated to innovation and excellence in primary education. | |
